Paula Burton
Parents As Teachers/Quality Care Coordinator
I have been with Smart Start of Davie County since 2004. My background includes working as a preschool teacher, in Child Care Resource and Referral, as an early childhood workshop facilitator and child care technical assistance provider. Most recently, I have had the pleasure to work with the Parents as Teachers program. I love the challenge of working with both child care providers to maintain and improve quality child care environments and families to support them in helping their children build a strong foundation for success in school and in life.
Rhonda Kannenberg
Administrative/Resource Specialist
I am the new Administrative/Resource Specialist for Smart Start. I recently relocated to Yadkinville after living in Arizona for four years. I am a graduate of Rutledge Business College with an A.S. in Business Administration. I later received my Early Childhood Credentials I and II, as well as my Early Childhood Certificate.
Before joining the Smart Start team, I worked as a Teacher, Assistant Director, and Director in the Early Childhood field. I also have several years administrative experience. As a previous Preschool business owner, I can appreciate the challenges that many parents and providers face. It is my hope to do whatever possible to lessen those challenges.
I look forward to serving the Davie County community and the agencies affiliated with our office.
Dr. Corey Miller
Executive Director
corey.smartstart@yadtel.net
I have been with Smart Start since 2007. I bring a background in human services, with previous work experience as a United Methodist pastor in Forsyth County, the county where I grew up. I also have worked for other non-profits, as well as County and State Government agencies in North Carolina and Washington.
I am passionate about supporting the development of young children and their families, and enjoy working within our Davie community to bring about further opportunities. I believe that Smart Start can serve a great role: to offer needed services, spread the word about the importance of the first five years in a child’s development, and bring together community partners around this vital work.
Lynette Pierce
Finance Manager
I am the Finance Manager and have been employed here since July 2000. As the Finance Manager, I oversee all internal fiscal matters, as well as work closely with all contracted service providers to ensure fiscal accountability.
Prior to Smart Start, my background was in human services, primarily working with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Davie and Davidson Counties. I received my Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Catawba College and certificate in Nonprofit Management from Duke University.
I am a Davie County native and enjoy the feeling of community and neighbors that still exists here.
Sheila Smith
Marketing & Event Coordinator
I joined the Smart Start team in August 2008 as the Marketing & Event Coordinator. I have a BA in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and completed my second major in Public Relations at Pembroke State University. I have several years of experience in marketing and event planning, but have been at home with my two children for the past few years.
As a mom, I understand the importance of emphasizing early childhood development, and establishing a love of learning. My role at Smart Start is to establish and fulfill marketing goals so that the people in Davie County know that we are here and what we have to offer. I am also responsible for coordinating the special events, including Snacks with Santa held in November and KidFest held in April.

I am the bilingual Parent Educator for the Parents as Teachers Program for Smart Start of Davie County. As the Parent Educator, I conduct home visits, group meetings, developmental screenings and referrals for participating families with children birth to 5 years of age, ensuring that parents are teaching their young children to learn, grow and develop to their full potential.
I recently moved to Davie County and am excited about living and working with the community. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and am looking forward to serving families with young children in Davie County.
